University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science

Environmental Education

From its first enabling legislation in 1941, the Center has included in its mission environmental education of school children, teachers, and the general public and application of science to the practical needs of the state. Our environmental education program at the Horn Point Laboratory on the Eastern Shore annually involves thousands of school children and teachers. With additional State funding appropriated in FY2001, UMCES enhanced its environmental education programs to each of its laboratories.

The Center has established the Environmental Science Education Council to bring together educational resources form all its laboratories, as well as the Maryland Sea Grant College. This summer, the Council will launch a new Summer Research Fellows Institute, built on its strong base o f environmental research. Working with funds provided by NOAA's Chesapeake Bay Program Office, a select group of teachers from around the State will be paired with research scientists whose work focuses on the Bay and its watershed.

The Maryland State Department of Education has chosen the interactive science lessons on the oyster, developed by Maryland Sea Grant, as a model for teaching science across the State. Those same lessons have also been selected by the National Science Teachers Association, with links to standard science texts, for use by public schools across the country.

Working with students, teachers, and the general public, UMCES and Sea Grant educators continue to focus on the science through real world applications, such as the rebuilding of oyster reefs.
