Dorchester County Artist’s Work Connects Horn Point Laboratory Visitors to the Bay

Cambridge, Md. (October 5, 2006) – The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) Horn Point Laboratory this week unveiled  a new sculpture by Rhodesdale artist Paul Lockhart. The sculpture greets visitors to Horn Point’s Aquaculture and Restoration Ecology Laboratory.

“Paul’s work captures the essence of what Horn Point’s scientists are working toward - a vibrant Chesapeake Bay with abundant rockfish, blue crabs, oysters and sea grasses,” said Horn Point Laboratory Director Mike Roman. “Visitors to Horn Point will be able to see the inspiration behind much of our research.”

The piece features a school of rockfish – or striped bass – swimming over a shoal that is home to oysters, blue crabs and underwater grasses. It measures 14’ by 6’ and is sculpted from copper and steel.
