The Pew Charitable Trusts is sponsoring the Pew Oceans Commission, a group of distinguished citizens who are examining the United States' ocean policy during 2000-2001 and will be making recommendations for improving its coherence and effectiveness. The Pew Oceans Commission is specifically addressing policies related to living resources, pollution and coastal development. Together with Dr. Rick Burroughs of the University of Rhode Island and several colleagues within the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (Christopher Rowe, Joel Baker, Robert Mason, and Ronald Siefert), I produced an assessment of the status of ocean and coastal pollution in the United States, the relative risks imposed, and the effectiveness of existing policies and programs. This report is being used by the Pew Oceans commissioners in the development of their report on improving U.S. ocean policy. The report, Marine Pollution in the United States: Significant Accomplishments, Future Challenges can be viewed or downloaded from the Pew Ocean Commission's website (Adobe Acrobat Reader Required). |
