Learn About the Bay and Oceans at UMCES Marine Science Day

June 9 event brings science to the Visitor Center at Sailwinds Park East

Cambridge, MD – May 17, 2007 The Visitor Center at Sailwinds Park East will host marine scientists from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Horn Point Laboratory for the first Marine Science Day on Saturday, June 9, 2007.

Hands-on activities and seminars will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and allow visitors to:

  • Find and touch creatures from in the Choptank River with a beach seining program beginning at 11:00 a.m.;
  • See and touch Chesapeake Bay creatures in the Horn Point Laboratory’s mobile touch tanks;
  • Learn about the Bay’s oysters and their restoration and see baby oysters under a microscope;
  • See live clownfish (like Nemo) and learn how the Horn Point Laboratory raises thousands of them; and,
  • See and learn about the prehistoric looking Atlantic sturgeon and find out how to adopt one!

Several marine scientists will also offer environmental talks:

  • 10:15 a.m. - Dr. Bill Boicourt - “Climate Change: What’s in Store for the Eastern Shore?”
  • 11:15 a.m. - Dr. Roger Newell - “Why Do We Need More Oysters?
In addition to programs at the Visitor Center, free guided Horn Point Laboratory Tours will be offered at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. For information and directions, visit http://www.hpl.umces.edu/tours. The Horn Point Lab is located at 2020 Horns Point Road in Cambridge.
