The Appalachian Laboratory serves as the host institution for the Chesapeake Watershed Cooperative Ecosystems Study Unit (CW CESU). The CW CESU is a partnership among 24 university/research and 9 federal agency partners whose members strive to understand and protect the natural and cultural resources of the region. The CW CESU was established in August 2001 through a Cooperative Agreement among its partners and is part of a national CESU network. The primary objective of the national network is to foster stewardship of the environment through collaborative research, technical assistance, and education that support integrated ecosystem management of cultural, natural and social resources.
