Guiding the State
The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science has a unique, state-directed mandate to “conduct a comprehensive program to develop and apply predictive ecology for Maryland to the improvement and preservation of the physical environment.” This mandate drives UMCES research and encourages scientists to turn newfound information into new ways to help preserve and protect the environment. By focusing on science application, the Center seeks to broaden its influence beyond academia and help improve the daily lives of Maryland residents.
As our state and nation continue to develop long-term strategies to combat global warming and the degradation of the Chesapeake Bay, UMCES researchers are helping develop innovative ways to solve large-scale environmental problems. As new environmental concerns come into view, the Center proactively investigates these issues so it may provide the best scientific guidance available to State leaders.
From our faculty’s work assessing the state-specific impacts of global warming for the Maryland Commission on Climate Change to gathering new scientific evidence about Chesapeake Bay restoration for Maryland’s BayStat initiative, the Center continues to advance our understanding of Maryland’s environment.
