Chesapeake Biological Laboratory

Education

Training and educating the next generation of environmental scientists is critical to fulfilling the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory’s mission. While CBL focuses on providing graduate-level students opportunities to learn from and work with active field researchers, the laboratory also offers programs designed to engage students of all ages and the general public.

Graduate education

The Chesapeake Biological Laboratory’s primary educational commitment is to provide graduate-level education in the marine and environmental sciences. Most of our students focus on problems associated with aquatic habitats (freshwater, estuarine, and marine), and our faculty research programs are particularly strong in fisheries, environmental chemistry and toxicology, and ecosystem science and restoration ecology.

Undergraduate education

The Laboratory offers tours, seminars on current research and graduate studies, and field-oriented activities for undergraduate classes. UMCES research vessels stationed at CBL are well-equipped for research/educational cruises tailored to undergraduate level courses.

Public education

Chesapeake Biological Laboratory often hosts seminars that are free and open to the public, including the popular Science for Citizens events. These are opportunities for our faculty, students, and visiting scholars to share their research efforts with the greater community. These events usually include a presentation followed by a question-and-answer session.
