Giving to Chesapeake Biological Laboratory

DONATE TODAY

The Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) is the founding laboratory of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. Since 1925, CBL has pioneered environmental research, educated hundreds of students and helped to ensure that the Chesapeake Bay and Maryland’s environment is healthy, abundant, and sustainable.

For 90 years, CBL scientists and students have made and discoveries about crabs, oysters, and fishes that improve food harvests and strengthen the environment on which we all depend. CBL also studies how chemicals – both man-made such as fertilizer or pharmaceuticals, and naturally occurring such as oxygen -- affect animals and our environment.  Our scientists apply the lessons from these discoveries to advise people on how best to ensure healthy ecosystems.

CBL’s research has helped make efforts to restore the Chesapeake Bay a model for the world. As the world’s estuaries and coasts experience increased population and development, it is critical we build on CBL’s heritage to ensure that we have the scientific knowledge to meet the challenges of a changing climate. Private philanthropy supports our efforts to create a more healthy and prosperous environment.

Your gift supports CBL’s efforts to:

  • Pioneer new methods and actions to restore the Chesapeake Bay, foster abundant crab and oyster harvests and ensure water quality
  • Nurture a new generation of environmental leaders through scholarships, awards and other educational support for students.
  • Improve understanding of marine life to improve management decisions, address the health of specific fish and the ecosystem they inhabit to improve food harvests.
  • Work with natural resource managers and public officials to ensure that that best scientific knowledge is informing policy decisions about fisheries, water quality and management of Chesapeake Bay resources.
