Field Assistant

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) Appalachian Laboratory has an opening for a field/laboratory assistant to support research activities on the hydrological and chemical dynamics of highway bioswales.  Job responsibilities will include water sample collection, field data acquisition and downloading, processing of water samples in the lab, as well as preparation of field equipment and gear.  This is a temporary position expected to begin in mid-February 2018 and end in December 2018.  The nature of the project includes sampling during rainfall events at sites in Hagerstown and Ellicott City, Maryland, which will require a good deal of flexibility on the part of the applicant, including the ability to perform some late night, overnight, and weekend sampling depending on the weather. 

Hourly rate will be competitive and based upon prior work experience and educational background.

Position Requirements:  Successful candidates must have at least an Associate’s degree in a scientific field and strong computing skills, including experience manipulating data using Microsoft Excel.  Furthermore, successful candidates are required to have the capacity to work independently at field sites under adverse weather conditions and to lift loads of at least 30 pounds.  A valid driver’s license with less than 5 points resulting from moving violations is also required.  If the successful candidate doesn't possess a MD driver’s license, (s)he will be responsible for providing a driving record from the license issuing state prior to an employment offer.   Applicants with prior professional or educational background in environmental science will be given additional consideration.
