Graduate Student Application Process
The University System of Maryland (USM) has several graduate programs relevant to environmental science, providing significant opportunities to tailor graduate studies to individual student’s interests. Selection of the most appropriate degree program to which a student should apply should be determined in consultation with the UMCES faculty member working in the research area of interest to the student.
Most students at UMCES are enrolled in the USM’s system-wide program in environmental science: the Marine, Estuarine, and Environmental Science (MEES) program.
Steps for students interested in applying:
- Determine which area of research you are most interested in and visit the web site describing this area and participating faculty
- Identify one or more faculty members you may be interested in studying with, familiarize yourself with their research and then contact them to determine if they are taking students at this time. Faculty can offer advice on the application process and the most appropriate graduate program given your interests.
- Contact the graduate program you are advised to consider and obtain application materials.
Funding opportunities for education and research are available to students through a variety of channels. The majority of students are funded by research assistantships, available through individual faculty.
