Assistant Professor: Molecular Biology of Marine Phototrophic Microbes

Closing Date:
03/01/2012

The Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET) seeks applications for the position of Assistant Professor (tenure-track).  IMET is a joint University System of Maryland research institute capitalizing on the strengths of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES), the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and the University of Maryland School of Medicine.  The scientists at IMET conduct marine and environmental research and thereby create technologies designed to foster the protection and restoration of coastal marine systems and their watersheds, sustainable use of their resources and improvement of human health.  IMET is in a dedicated state-of-the-art research facility located at Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

The successful candidate will have a track-record of outstanding research on marine phototrophic microbes such as microalgae or cyanobacteria, using molecular approaches to elucidate physiology, ecology and/or biochemistry of these microbes.  Candidates with an interest in marine bioenergy applications or nutrient cycling and in practical applications of their fundamental research, including interactions with industry, are encouraged to apply.  A demonstrated ability to establish a well-funded research program is expected for the successful candidate.  Primary appointment is at UMCES, with a secondary appointment at UMBC.  The primary focus of the appointee will be on research; teaching at the graduate level is encouraged.

A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree is required in microbiology, molecular biology, bioengineering or related fields and candidates should have postdoctoral experience and a strong publication record.  Applicants should send a letter of interest, research statement, curriculum vitae, and the names of three references to: Russell Hill, Interim Director, IMET, by email to hill@umces.edu.  To receive full consideration, applications should be submitted by March 1, 2012. The USM is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action Employer.
