Jan Vicente, is a new LMRCSC-supported Ph.D. student in the MEES Environmental Molecular Biology/Biotechnology track, working in Dr. Hill's lab at UMCES-IMET. Mr. Vicente is working on "Analysis of the bacterial symbionts associated with the giant barrel sponge Xestospongia muta". Mr. Vicente graduated with a B.S. in Biology in 2007 from the University of Puerta Rico, Rio Pedras. He received a MS in Marine Science (minor in Marine Policy) from University of North Carolina in 2010. Mr. Vicente has expertise in sponge systematics, identifying unknown compounds using mass spectroscopy, infra-red spectroscopy, H-NMR spectroscopy, and C13-NMR spectroscopy, as well as in molecular biological techniques including DNA sequencing and PCR. He is trained in underwater photography is a certified AAUS scientific diver and a NAUI diving instructor.
