Bio

I have been a professor at Horn Point since the fall of 2013, prior to which I was a postdoc at Clemson University. Much of my research to date has focused on the population genetics and life history of marine invertebrates and I am actively working to apply new genomic technologies to understand the biology of larvae, dispersal processes in the ocean, and adaptation to environmental change.

The Plough lab at Horn Point Laboratory uses genetic and genomic tools to understand the ecology and evolution of marine animals, with a special interest in the biology of larvae. Recent research has focused on the population genetics of oyster restoration in Chesapeake Bay, blue crab population connectivity, and environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis of river herring.

Areas of Expertise

  • Population genetics/genomics of marine animals
  • Oyster larval biology
  • Oyster aquaculture and restoration
  • Conservation genetics and tracking of marine species (e.g. eDNA)
