Sustainable Urban Estuary Scientist

The University of Maryland Center for Environment Science (UMCES) is one of 12 institutions of the University System of Maryland.  With a unique statutory mission, UMCES is the premier research and educational institute within Maryland working to understand and manage our world‘s natural resources. The Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) is one of four constituent laboratories within UMCES. With a central purpose and presence in the Chesapeake Bay, our field sites from the Appalachian Mountains to the Arctic Ocean, and scientific foci that range from fisheries to climate change, CBL pursues solutions to improve environmental quality in the natural and the built world, and train the next generation of science leaders.

CBL has developed the Maritime Environmental Resource Center, dedicated to working with state, federal and industrial partners to develop impactful research on the assessing and mitigating environmental impacts of port operations and shipping. This research has included evaluation of dredge material management options and the beneficial reuse of dredge material, ballast water treatment technologies, impacts of wastewater treatment and discharge, and the economic impacts of invasive species.  Most recently, this relationship has included the establishment of the Maritime Environmental Resource Center at CBL.

The field of urban ecology has focused on solving practical problems of urban planning and waterfront development, environmental protection and restoration, and urban wildlife conservation.  However, little work has specifically focused on urban estuaries, like the Port of Baltimore. Examples of potential research undertaken may include: Prevention of destructive biofouling on commercial vessels and port infrastructure, continued support of safe and innovative dredged material reuse, and restoration of urban estuarine habitats.  As a demonstration of CBL’s continuing commitment to science-based environmental stewardship and the sustainable use of urban estuaries, we seek to appoint a tenure track faculty member at the full professor rank to provide leadership in developing this initiative into an interdisciplinary program, building on ongoing work collaborations with CBL and UMCES faculty. 

CBL’s location on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay affords excellent opportunities to develop research on the Bay and its watershed, although UMCES faculty conduct research on marine and coastal ecosystems worldwide. Field studies can be supported by research vessels (http://www.umces.edu/research-fleet).  CBL has state-of-the-art sea water systems to support controlled tank and mesocosm experiments, and analytical facilities.  CBL has also invested to establish the environmental statistics collaborative (www.umces.edu/environmental-statistics-collaborative). The successful candidate will teach graduate courses in the University of Maryland System MEES Program (http://www.umces.edu/graduate-program)

Salary and benefits are competitive and dependent on qualifications. Ph.D. is required at time of appointment.
