Horn Point Laboratory Alumnus Recognized for Outstanding Graduate Studies

Biologist Caroline Solomon lauded by American Association of University Women

Cambridge, Md. (June 13, 2007) – Horn Point Laboratory  graduate Dr. Caroline Solomon was recently honored by the College Park Branch of the American Association of University Women for her outstanding work as a graduate student in Biological Oceanography while studying at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science in Cambridge.

Solomon, now Assistant Professor at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., studied under Dr. Patricia Glibert at the Horn Point Laboratory.

“Carrie undertook a challenging course of study, and completed an important dissertation on the dynamics of urea use by phytoplankton. Her work has implications for our understanding of harmful algal blooms and the relationship to nutrient runoff.  Carrie’s accomplishment was even more remarkable because she completed her graduate work while also working full time as an instructor at Gallaudet University,” said Dr. Glibert.

The AAUW College Park Branch has presented this award to a University of Maryland woman graduate student since 1958. One awardee is chosen among all PhD recipients in all disciplines for the preceding calendar year. The award includes membership in the AAUW, an organization that for more than 125 years has advanced equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.

Solomon completed her undergraduate studies at Harvard University and her M.S. the University of Washington. Solomon also previously received a Fulbright award for study in Australia following her undergraduate studies.
