Position: Paid summer internship in Environmental Social Science
Location: Remote working
About: Dr. Lisa Wainger’s research group at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental
Science, Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, works to address environmental problems using computer
and statistical modeling and other scientific tools at the interface of ecological and economic/social
Responsibilities: A full‐time summer position (June – August, 2021) is available to support a project to
improve understanding of the potential use of social science to achieve Chesapeake Bay restoration
goals. The restoration goals include improving water quality, habitat, environmental education, and
equity and diversity, among other goals.
Specific tasks will include:
1. Conduct a review of reports and peer‐reviewed publications describing past social science
o Organize, read and interpret publications
o Using criteria developed with the project team, classify projects from publications in
terms of goals, social science theories applied, target audiences, and other aspects of
scope and decision context.
o Create a citation database using Zotero software
o Conduct searches of literature databases (Web of Science, Google Scholar)
2. Create products to communicate results to project team, environmental managers and other
Chesapeake Bay stakeholders
o Develop informational graphics in Excel and Powerpoint, documenting results
o Develop written materials summarizing project results
‐ Strong organizational and writing skills
‐ Major or substantive coursework in psychology, economics or policy science
‐ Experience doing a literature review
‐ Interest in translating research into management recommendations
‐ Eligible to work in the US with no sponsorship
