Metals in Urban Estuaries\n\nPRESENTED BY DR. ANDREW HEYES\, UMCES CHESAPE
AKE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY\n\n\n\nContamination of the Chesapeake Bay and i
ts waters extends beyond nutrients. Organic chemicals\, “heavy metals” and
trace elements once readily flowed into our urban waters unfettered\, a p
ractice clearly evident in our coastal sediments. While at lower concentra
tions than in the past\, heavy metals continue to enter our coastal waterw
ays\, and urban expansion and climate change further compound this problem
. In this presentation\, Dr. Andrew Heyes will explore how metals such as
 mercury\, chromium\, copper\, and zinc have\, and continue\, to enter our
urban waters. Through an understanding of the behavior of these elements u
pon arrival in the Bay waters\, he will discuss how they may or may not im
pact wildlife and how we utilize this resource.\n\n\n\nCost: Free\nWhere:
ZOOM Webinar - you will receive a participant link after registering\nPre-
Registration Required: https://www.usmf.org/s4c/\nWho: Members of the gene
ral public. No scientific background needed\; everyone is welcome!\n\n\n\n
Please note that this seminar will be hosted as Zoom Webinars only. Out of
an abundance of caution related to the COVID-19 coronavirus\, there will
be no in-person attendance opportunity.\n\n\n\nThis seminar is presented a
s a part of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory’s Science for Communities
Seminar Series.  These public programs invite the community to discover h
ow our scientists are developing new approaches to solving the environment
al challenges facing Southern Maryland\, our nation\, and the world.  View
