Presented by Dr. Johan Schijf\n\n\n\nAs the demand for high-tech devices h
as exploded worldwide\, so has the need for the exotic metals that are use
d to make them. When we throw these devices away\, we also release element
s that were once extremely rare into the environment\, creating many quest
ions about their ecological impacts and ultimate fate. This seminar gives
an overview of some of these impacts\, the challenges of complete end-of-l
ife recycling\, and how plants might be used for metal contaminant monitor
 ing and possibly remediation.\n\n\n\nWhere: CBL’s Bernie Fowler Lab\, 142
 Williams Street\, Solomons\, MD 20688. View a campus map.\nCost: Free. No
 pre-registration necessary. Seating is available on a first-come\, first-s
erved basis.\nWho: Members of the general public. No scientific background
needed\; everyone is welcome!\nWhy: Learn something new and interesting w
hile celebrating science on scenic Solomons Island\n\n\n\nThis seminar is
presented as a part of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory's Science for
Citizens Seminar Series.  These public seminars invite the community to di
scover how our scientists are developing new approaches to solving the env
ironmental challenges facing Southern Maryland\, our nation\, and the worl
 d. View the complete Fall 2018 Science for Citizens Seminar Series schedul
