us for this year’s Open House “Sustainable Solutions through Science.” Le
arn about cutting edge research our faculty and graduate students conduct
in the Chesapeake Bay and across the world's oceans. Explore environmental
science through exhibits\, presentations\, and hands-on activities.  Boar
d the research vessel RACHEL CARSON and explore aquaculture and more at th
e boat ramp.  Visit one of the East Coast's largest oyster hatcheries.  Ga
mes and free t-shirts for the kids and food for all provided by Ruritans a
nd Rita's Italian Ice.  This is a great family event\, so plan to spend so
me time with us and learn about the world of a marine scientist. \n\n\n\n“
This is the best day of the year for the community to learn about the scie
nce of the Bay. Everyone at the lab is on deck to explain their research w
ith activities and displays that make it easy to understand\,” said Horn P
oint Laboratory Director Mike Roman.\n\n\n\nVisitors to the Open House wil
l be able to:\n\n\n	Build a healthy marsh and learn who are our best partne
rs in this effort.\n	See an animation of the travels of oyster larvae as t
hey move from the reef where they spawned to their new\, permanent home re
ef. \n	Match up a DNA sequence to microscopic creatures important to the f
ood chain.\n	Touch a sturgeon whose ancestors date to the Jurassic period\n
Play in a digital sand box to create shorelines and model weather’s impact
around the Bay with laser imaging.\n	Meet and talk to graduate students ab
out their environmental career goals.\n	At the children’s activity tent\, c
reate eco-friendly animals that live in the water with recycled materials.
\n	Play games that teach fun facts about the Bay.\n	Go on a scavenger hunt t
hrough the exhibits to learn how the Bay’s lasting health starts with each
of us making a cleaner environment today.\n	Enjoy a shuttle tour of the ca
mpus.\n	Explore all living things found at HPL's campus with the Maryland B
iodiversity Project (MBP).  Add species to the website as you observe them
while walking the HPL campus.\n\n\n\n\nFREE! Rain or shine. Directions to
the laboratory.\n\n\n\nQuestions?  Contact Carin Starr 410-221-8408 or cs
