\n\n\nTitle: The Parabrachial Complex: A Nexus of Ascending and Desc
ending Pain Systems\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Asaf Keller\, University of Maryla
nd Baltimore School of Medicine\n\n\n\nAbstract: The most common and debil
itating medical condition is chronic\, intractable pain. Most patients com
plain of spontaneous\, ongoing pain\, as well as an increased sensation to
both painful and normally non-painful stimuli. Available treatments produ
ce either incomplete and temporary pain relief\, or adverse side effects.
The talk will be based on new findings\, showing that the parabrachial nuc
 leus\, a relatively unknown center of pain processing\, plays a critical r
ole in the development of chronic pain. We test the hypothesis that chroni
c\, neuropathic pain results from abnormally amplified activity of the par
abrachial nucleus\, and that this produces abnormal release of serotonin f
rom neurons that the parabrachial targets. The increase in serotonin\, the
n\, causes abnormally high levels of activity of neurons in the spinal cor
d\, resulting in increased pain perception. These findings provide novel i
nsights on the pathogenesis of chronic pain.\n\n\n\nHost: Nilli Zmora\, Ph
 .D.
