\n\n\nTitle: “NEW” Resource Recovery from Wastewater through Technological
Advancement\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Zhen 'Jason' He (Professor\, Virginia Tec
h)\n\n\n\nAbstract: Rapid socio-economic growth has created great challeng
es such as water scarcity\, larger nutrient demand for increasing food pro
duction\, and energy shortage. Wastewater is a key element in the water-en
ergy-food nexus\, and may offer a promising solution for alleviating these
challenges through innovative recovery of value-added resources. It is of
great interest to transform conventional energy-intensive wastewater trea
tment to a resource recovery process for reclaiming valuable resources suc
h as nutrients (e.g.\, nitrogen and phosphorus)\, bioenergy derived from o
rganic wastes\, and high-quality water towards wastewater reuse. Those val
uable resources are considered “NEW resources” (Nutrient-Energy-Water). Th
e demand for NEW resources urges the development of cost-effective reclama
tion technologies through innovative research. This presentation will focu
s on synergistic cooperation between conventional (e.g.\, anaerobic digest
ion) and emerging technologies (e.g.\, bioelectrochemical systems\, forwar
d osmosis\, etc.) for accomplishing NEW resource recovery from wastewater.
