Chesapeake Bay health showing significant improvement over time

The overall health of the Chesapeake Bay is showing significantly improving trends over time, but some regions still score poorly, reported the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) in its annual Chesapeake Bay and Watershed Report Card released today. Similar to 2021, the overall Chesapeake Bay received a C grade.

Ming Li receives President’s Award for Excellence in Application of Science

Ryan Woodland selected by UMCES graduate students as outstanding faculty mentor

Associate Professor Ryan Woodland, (link to bio) an ecologist whose research focuses on food web ecology, has been selected by the graduate student body at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science to receive the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award for his dedication to both science and his students.

Mary Ann Manley honored with the UMCES Staff Excellence Award

For 36 years, Mary Ann Manley provided exemplary service to the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and Horn Point Laboratory community through her work as a Program Management Specialist in the Horn Point business office. She was a leader in demonstrating teamwork among her colleagues and her exemplary performance consistently demonstrated a high level of commitment to UMCES. Manley retired in July 2022.

Graduate student Isabel Sanchez-Viruet receives UMCES Student Service Award

Graduate student Isabel Sanchez-Viruet, a Ph.D. candidate who studies the potential of floating wetlands to remove nitrogen from tidal waters, has been awarded the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) 2023 Student Service Award for a high level of engagement and service to the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, UMCES, and the broader community, serving in an array of mentorship, service, and leadership roles.
