Carys Mitchelmore Graduates from Leadership Maryland’s Executive Program

UMCES Appalachian Laboratory hosts annual undergraduate internship program

Each summer, the Appalachian Laboratory Summer Undergraduate Internship Program hosts five to eight students from local universities and colleges for full-time, paid experiences in research and science communication. UMCES Recognized With A Prestigious Honor By The Coastal & Estuarine Research Federation

The 2025 Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation (CERF) Achievement Award for Organizational Coastal Stewardship has been awarded to UMCES. The award recognizes UMCES’s 100-year legacy of advancing scientific knowledge, public education, and management solutions in support of coastal and estuarine health worldwide.

Coral skeletons left by a medieval tsunami whisper a warning for the Caribbean region

Sometime between 1381 and 1391, an earthquake exceeding magnitude 8.0 rocked the northeastern Caribbean and sent a tsunami barreling toward the island of Anegada. Now, in an open-access paper recently published in Geophysical Research Letters, led by Hali Kilbourne, an associate research professor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, researchers narrow the tsunami time frame to the last decades of the 14th century. The researchers expect this finding to support ongoing efforts to prepare for future Caribbean tsunamis.
