Environmental Sustainability Initiative

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science created the Environmental Sustainability Council to provide leadership, advice, and assistance in implementing practices that enhance the environmental sustainability of the operations of UMCES and the Appalachian Laboratory.

The faculty of the Appalachian Laboratory designs and conducts research to understand the consequences of environmental change on the management of natural resources and the restoration of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The goal of these research projects, and our associated teaching activities, is to understand the requirements of an ecologically sustainable future even though the potential impacts of climate change may be significant.
