The Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography has awarded Dr. Walter R. Boynton this distinguished honor in recognition of his research to solve environmental problems and shape policy with long-lasting impacts on estuarine ecosystems.
The prestigious honor has gone to just seven people in nearly three decades. Maryland Sea Grant College awards the medal jointly with Virginia Sea Grant and the Chesapeake Research Consortium.
A new system, called WhaleWatch, produces monthly maps of blue whale "hotspots" to alert ships where there may be an increased risk of encountering these endangered whales.
