Philanthropic Coalition Renews Major Investment in Appalachian Laboratory Science for Second Year

In 2024, a group of donors committed to advancing environmental conservation in the central Appalachians created a transformational solution: the Appalachian Laboratory Investors Network, or TALIN. Now, in year 2, TALIN has funded two new research projects focused on forest conservation and management.

Carys Mitchelmore Graduates from Leadership Maryland’s Executive Program

Leadership Maryland honored Mitchelmore, a resident of Calvert county, and the entire Executive Program Class of 2025 at its 32nd graduation ceremony held December 2 at the Westin Annapolis. Mitchelmore is now a member of Leadership Maryland’s powerful alumni network, consisting of more than 1,600 esteemed leaders from all over the state.

UMCES Appalachian Laboratory hosts annual undergraduate internship program

Each summer, the Appalachian Laboratory Summer Undergraduate Internship Program hosts five to eight students from local universities and colleges for full-time, paid experiences in research and science communication. The summer 2026 application opens Monday, November 24, and can be found at www.umces.edu/al/internships.

The award recognizes UMCES’s 100-year legacy of advancing scientific knowledge, public education, and management solutions in support of coastal and estuarine health worldwide.
