Mobile responsiveness aids discovery of UMCES’ scientific research and graduate education
The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES), a leading research and educational institution working to understand and manage the world’s resources, launches a newly redesigned website this week at www.umces.edu. From a network of research laboratories across the state of Maryland, UMCES scientists provide sound advice to help state and national leaders manage the environment and prepare future scientists to meet the global challenges of the 21st century.
“The new website was designed so each page is a welcome mat to the user, is shareable, and encourages exploration of our scientific enterprise,” said President Don Boesch of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. “We want to increase engagement and education of our key audiences, including members of the public who are interested in environmental science, policy makers, prospective graduate students, and educators."
A key goal for the project was to create a functional, attractive, and mobile-responsive website that reflects UMCES’ identity as a leader in environmental research and education while providing easy access to our research, resources, expertise, and educational programs. It was important to balance the UMCES’ institutional identity with representation of our four research campuses located throughout the state through the website’s design, navigation, and content. New, robust Bio Pages offer a place for faculty, students, and other staff to highlight their research interests, as well as for the public to access our scientific experts.
An internal UMCES Web Project Team including staff from communications, IT, advancement and faculty from across labs worked together to formulate a scope of work and select an external vendor to build the website during this year-long project.
The website was created by Baltimore-based website and web app developer, Mindgrub.
