Workshop for students grade K-12 to explore the sciences

The Society for Women in Marine Science (SWMS) Horn Point Laboratory chapter invites students K-12 to spend a day exploring the life of a scientist. The workshop is free and takes place Saturday,November 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 pm.

Record number of oysters planted in Chesapeake Bay this year

More than 1.7 billion new juvenile oysters have been planted on sanctuary and public oyster reefs in the Chesapeake Bay this year, surpassing an ambitious 2023 planting goal and setting a new annual record. Oysters for the restoration tributaries are grown primarily at University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s Horn Point Laboratory.

Professor Emeritus, Tom Fisher, is advising Queen Anne's County residents David Rockland and Sarah Dutton to better understand if the restoration practices they have implemented on their land are providing environmental benefits, primarily improving water quality. Fisher walked David and Sarah’s property with them, identifying best sites to implement their monitoring program and helped them set up a water testing program through UMCES’ labs.

Governor Moore visits UMCES’ oyster hatchery, signs executive order to establish oyster task force

During an Eastern Shore “Bay Day” tour, Governor Wes Moore visited the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s oyster hatchery at its Horn Point Laboratory in Cambridge, Md., and announced a major policy shift in how Maryland will deploy state resources to improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay and other waterways to restore the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays.
