New leadership team selected at Appalachian Laboratory

President Peter Goodwin of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) has appointed Dr. David Nelson as the next Director of the Appalachian Laboratory. Dr. Matt Fitzpatrick has been named as the Laboratory’s first Associate Director for Research. Both joined the Appalachian Laboratory faculty in 2009, where they now hold the rank of Professor.

Measuring nitrogen to improve its management

A new paper published in Nature Food offers the first comprehensive comparison of the most advanced international efforts to measure how nitrogen is managed in agriculture. Zhang et al synthesize results from nearly thirty researchers from ten different research groups across the world, including universities, private sector fertilizer associations, and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

UMCES graduates next generation of environmental leaders

Twelve graduate students received joint degrees from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) and the University of Maryland College Park (UMD) at a virtual ceremony on May 27, 2021. The Commencement 2021 ceremony featured a keynote address from Senator Cardin, distinguished speakers, and the recognition of outstanding faculty, staff and students.

Eric Davidson named Jefferson Science Fellow
