IMET summer internship program aims to increase diversity in marine sciences

Over the past 19 summers, more than 220 students from across the country have had the chance to work with some of the world’s leading scientists at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET). Through the IMET Summer Undergraduate Internship Program, students who are from historically underrepresented backgrounds in marine and environmental science have the opportunity to conduct their own research projects.

UMCES Graduates Students Awarded 2021 Knauss Fellowship

Two University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science graduate students have been named finalists of the John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship program sponsored by Sea Grant and NOAA. Shadaesha Green and Suzi Spitzer will join the 42nd class of the fellowship, and be placed in a government organization at a position in either the Executive or Legislative branches of government on coastal and marine science policy for one year.

UMCES researchers were selected to receive $3M award from U.S. Department of Energy to develop a scalable carbon-negative bioreactor system to capture carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, from power plant flue gases.

Ratcliffe Environmental Entrepreneurs Fellowship sets up students for success in business

Each year, two awards are presented to graduate students following the completion of the Ratcliffe Environmental Entrepreneurs Fellowship. This year, Lauren Jonas won for “Best Product” for Probeeotic, a dry probiotic spray to help the immune systems of bees. Morgan Ross won “Best Presentation” for her work to develop a wearable toxin sensor for Brevetoxin aerosols.
