The Chesapeake Global Collaboratory recently hosted more than 85 scientists and policy makers at the new LEED-certified Chesapeake Analytics Collaborative Building in Solomons, MD. The event brought together representatives from Maryland state agencies (Departments of Agriculture, Emergency Management, Environment, Natural Resources, Planning, Transportation, and the MD Environmental Service) and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science to launch new collaborative initiatives.
Participants heard from UMCES, MD DNR, and MDE leaders who discussed the importance of the "Collaboratory" approach for addressing Maryland's complex environmental challenges. Experts presented on state-wide issues ranging from PFAS to watershed restoration and on emerging modeling, big data, and analytic techniques. Participants brainstormed science gaps for water systems, land use, ecosystem health, climate resilience, and cross-cutting issues, and they identified 15 sustainability challenges that are well-suited for addressing collaboratively through shared data and expertise. Working groups are being established to develop next steps.
Together, we’re building a healthier and more resilient Maryland!
