SOLOMONS, MD - Dr. Tom Miller has been elected as a Fellow of the Marine Biological Association (MBA). Dr. Miller is a professor of fisheries science at UMCES’ Chesapeake Biological Laboratory in Solomons, MD, where he has worked and taught since 1994.
“The MBA is the oldest scientific society in the world that focuses on marine science. I am truly humbled to be elected as one of its Fellows,” Dr. Miller shared.
“My six-month sabbatical in Plymouth in the UK, home of the MBA, has allowed me to explore the MBA archive to unravel the origins of marine science to put UMCES’ centenary into a proper perspective. There are so many parallels that I am excited to explore. The MBA is a world leader in the application of marine science, and particularly marine biology for the public good. Its mission closely parallels our UMCES mission. To be elected as one of its fellows is an honor of a lifetime.”

Born in England and educated in the U.K., U.S., and Canada, Dr. Miller was appointed to the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory faculty in 1994 and was CBL’s Director from 2011-2023. During his career, he has been a leader in the development of approaches to manage several Chesapeake Bay species, combining laboratory, field and modeling approaches to address questions of interest to society. Most recently, his research has focused on both the effects of ocean acidification on blue crab, recruitment issues in menhaden and striped bass, and stakeholder involvement in recreational fisheries.
“UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory is proud to celebrate Dr. Tom Miller's election to the Marine Biological Association,” Dr. Beth Polidoro, Director of Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, shared. “This prestigious recognition honors Dr. Miller's lifetime of scientific achievement and acknowledges his lasting contributions to marine biology, mentorship of future scientists, and commitment to evidence-based stewardship of marine resources.”
Dr. Miller is no stranger to high accolades; he was appointed an "Admiral of the Chesapeake” by Maryland Governor Wes Moore in 2025. He has been the recipient of the President’s Award for the Application of Science at UMCES and received the 2015 USM Regents’ Faculty Award for Public Service, the highest honor that the Board bestows to recognize exemplary faculty achievement. Dr. Miller is also a two-time recipient of the Graduate Education Award for excellence in teaching from the Marine Estuarine Environmental Sciences program at the University of Maryland.
