Bio

I am a biogeochemist and ecosystem ecologist with expertise in watershed science. I study how anthropogenic impacts — including land-use change, urbanization, and agricultural intensification — affect watershed hydrology, nutrient cycling, and water quality, as well as the effectiveness of mitigation actions and best management practices such as stream restoration, stormwater BMPs, forest restoration, and other nature-based solutions. My work spans temperate and tropical systems, from stream restoration effectiveness in the Chesapeake Bay watershed to the impacts of sugarcane agriculture and forest restoration on water resources in Brazil. I also study nitrogen cycling and greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural and tropical landscapes, examining how land management shifts affect nitrogen export to waterways and CO2/N2O fluxes from soils. I have led numerous federally and state-funded projects evaluating restoration practices and ecosystem services, with long-running collaborations with agencies including the Chesapeake Bay Program, Maryland Department of the Environment, and research institutions across Brazil. My work has been published in over 45 peer-reviewed papers, and I regularly advise state and federal expert panels on stream and wetland restoration policy.
