Get Involved

Make a gift

Are you committed to solving the environmental science challenges of our time? Perhaps you are passionate about educational opportunities for students or members of the community. Whatever your giving goals, your gift to the Appalachian Laboratory can help you fulfill that purpose and is the most direct way to have an impact on science in our community.

Even the smallest gift can make a meaningful impact by...

  • Supporting Appalachian Laboratory scientists in addressing our most pressing environmental challenges through their leading edge research at home and abroad;
  • Providing educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students training to become the next generation of scientists;
  • Recognizing the efforts of environmental educators in our local region through the Richard Johnson Environmental Education Award those engaging in STEM activities through the Appalachian Laboratory Inspiration Award;
  • Encouraging lifelong learning in environmental science in our region through support for our environmental education and outreach activities.

The UMCES Appalachian Laboratory presents two community awards annually. For over thirty years the Richard Johnson Environmental Education Award has recognized community members and organizations engaged in environmental education in Garrett County and Allegany County in western Maryland. The Appalachian Laboratory began recognizing those individuals and organizations supporting STEM activities in our tri-state region as part of our 60th anniversary in 2022.  Nominations for the Johnson Award open in March, while nominations for the Inspiration Award open in October.

Learning lasts a lifetime.  As part of its commitment to public education, the Appalachian Laboratory of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences (UMCES-AL) offers free community presentations and events through its Watershed Moments Community Learning Series. Presented at the Lab and at venues throughout the area, past events have included hands on activities in labs, guest speakers, films, and art shows.

Attendance is free and open to the public.

Volunteer

From time to time, faculty at the Appalachian Laboratory seek community members to serve as volunteers or citizen scientists with projects. One past project, the Citizens Restoring American Chestnuts, distributed American chestnut seeds and saplings for community members to plant and monitor, reporting tree measurements to project team leaders on a quarterly basis.
