Dr. James McLaren will present "Modelling adaptation of migratory orientation to changing geomagnetic and environmental landscapes," as part of the Appalachian Laboratory's Visiting Scholar Seminar Series.
Following studies in Mathematics, Oceanography and Music, James McLaren completed his PhD in 2015 at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in modelling adaptive scheduling and orientation in bird migration. Modelling migration behaviour remained his research focus during postdocs at the University of Delaware and Environment and Climate Change Canada, using weather surveillance radar and radio-telemetry data to assess environmental drivers of migratory stopover and flight decisions. James currently works at the University of Oldenburg, Germany, with a particular interest in understanding how migratory orientation programs can both mediate and constrain evolution of routes, in response to global environmental change. He also recently became a guest member at William Fagan’s lab at the University of Maryland.
Please note that seminars in the Visiting Scholars Series are open to the public but are intended for scientific audiences. To learn more about our programming for general audiences, please visit our outreach webpage.
