When Kathleen Gillespie isn't working in the lab, she's enjoying Baltimore's artistic and literary community.
Gillespie is a poet with a doctorate in marine biotechnology. She came to University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science through its Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center. After earning her doctorate, Gillespie returned from a visiting professorship and now operates as an affiliate research scientist at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology in Baltimore.
Gillespie has found a unique intersection between her two passions. She recently spoke about the impact science has on her poetry and finding the poetry in science for a podcast with Maryland Humanities, which was featured on WYPR.
"The prevailing thought is that art is gloriously created through inspiration while science is simply task driven. When a scientist is performing an experiment, there are definitely rules to be followed, but inspiration acts to improve this process," she said.
