Appalachian Laboratory launches Inspiration Award on 60th anniversary

September 23, 2022

The Appalachian Laboratory of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science is pleased to announce the launch of the Appalachian Laboratory Inspiration Award in commemoration of the Laboratory’s 60th anniversary.

During its 60-year history, the Laboratory has served as a leading scientific institution in western Maryland, conducting research, advising state leaders, and training the next generation of scientists.

“As a graduate institution that has also hosted a number of undergraduate interns over the years, we are particularly committed to the goal of fostering the next generation of scientists,” said Dr. David Nelson, Appalachian Laboratory Director and Professor. “Today’s students are tomorrow’s scientists, and we will rely on them to continue to find solutions to the challenges we face well into the future.”

The new award will recognize those in the region who share this same commitment to future generations by supporting or engaging in activities to promote and advance science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in our region.  The award will be presented annually at a special ceremony held in the spring.

Individuals, government agencies, nonprofits, and for-profit entities are eligible. Nominees must be engaged in or supporting programming in the Laboratory’s defined region, which includes western Maryland and surrounding areas in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Western Maryland is defined as Allegany, Garrett, and Washington counties in Maryland; the surrounding area is defined as Bedford, Fulton, and Somerset counties in Pennsylvania or Mineral, Morgan, Preston, and Hampshire counties in West Virginia.
