Animal Use in Research (IACUC)
UMCES Policy follows the standards and regulations established by Public Health Service (PHS) Policies and requirements of the Federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) and the Federal regulations established by the USDA to enforce the AWA.
The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) is responsible for monitoring institutional compliance with PHS policy and guidelines. The two documents primarily relied on for determining compliance are the PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, published by the National Research Council.
OLAW also created the following brochure to inform PIs of their compliance responsibilities under the PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals: What Investigators Need to Know About the Use of Animals Brochure
