Dr. Louis Plough will give a talk titled “What’s in your water? Understanding what is in our waters using environmental DNA (eDNA)."
The Plough lab at the Horn Point Laboratory uses genetic and genomic tools to understand what is in our waters. Recent research has focused on the population genetics of oyster restoration, blue crab population dynamics, and environment DNA, eDNA, analysis of river herring.
“The basic idea behind 'eDNA' sampling is that aquatic species leave behind DNA in their environment. A water sample taken in the proximity of a particular species of animal or fish allows detection by the presence of their eDNA. Thus, we can track who is in specific waters," said Louis Plough.
