Training and educating the nation’s next generation of environmental scientists is critical to fulfilling UMCES-IMET's mission. While our faculty focuses on providing graduate level students opportunities to learn from and work with active biotech researchers, UMCES-IMET also offers programs designed to engage students of all ages. UMCES-IMET graduate students are enrolled in another USM degree-granting institution and conduct their research at IMET's Baltimore Inner Harbor Location.
IMET Summer Internship
The mission of the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET) is to develop innovative approaches to protect and restore coastal marine systems and their watersheds, sustainably use resources in ways to benefit human well-being, and to integrate research excellence with human education, training and economic development. The summer internship will provide orientation to working in a lab, seminars on the use of molecular techniques in fisheries and environmental research, introduction to bioanalytics and DNA- sequencing, and a one-day workshop on communicating science, and a research project with an IMET faculty mentor.
Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center
Each summer, the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology offers students an opportunity to conduct research in marine sciences applying molecular tools through the Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center (LMRCSC). The internship includes orientation to working in a lab, seminars on the use of molecular techniques in fisheries and environmental research, a one-day workshop on communicating science, and a research project with an LMRCSC-associated faculty mentor. The program runs nine weeks.
Ratcliffe Environmental Entrepreneurs Fellowship Program
The Ratcliffe Environmental Entrepreneur Fellowship (REEF) Program, funded through the Philip and Carole Ratcliffe Foundation, helps young scientists cultivate leadership and business skills. It enhances students' appreciation of the potential business implications of their research. The program broadens opportunities for those who wish to start their own business, advance careers within established companies, pursue environmental policy, or collaborate with industry as an academic scientist.
