The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents has appointed Dr. Fernando Miralles-Wilhelm the next president of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES). Miralles-Wilhelm is currently professor and dean of the College of Science at George Mason University. He will be the seventh president in UMCES' nearly 100-year history.

First-of-its-kind database tracks agricultural phosphorus use world-wide

Researchers from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science have released a first-of-its-kind study quantifying cropland phosphorus budgets around the world, which will help in identifying nutrient management gaps in different regions in food production and consumption systems. This new database will help countries and regions to evaluate their performances in addressing phosphorus pollution and scarcity challenges, and guide actions towards a more sustainable future.

Chesapeake Bay's role in greenhouse gas release and capture

A team of scientists from UMCES spent several days aboard the Chesapeake Bay research vessel Rachel Carson collecting DNA from the Chesapeake Bay. Their goal was to understand how much the Chesapeake Bay is a source of greenhouse gases to atmosphere versus a sink, or container, and how it impacts the Earth’s changing climate.
