Assistant Research Scientist

Areas of Expertise Wildfire science; fire management; remote sensing; machine learning; fire-climate-human interactions

Bio

Kaiwei Luo is an Assistant Research Scientist at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s Appalachian Laboratory. His research focuses on the full wildfire lifecycle, linking pre-fire vegetation stress and vulnerability, active-fire behavior and dynamics, and post-fire severity, ecological impacts, regeneration, and recovery. His long-term goal is to develop an observation-constrained framework that integrates these processes to improve wildfire risk and resilience assessments under changing fire–vegetation–climate interactions and to support fire management and climate adaptation through AI-enabled modeling and simulation.
