Bio
Dr. Ziyu Chen earned his Ph.D. in Ocean Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology (2022) advised by Dr. Philip Orton. He contributed to major research projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the City of New York, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. These projects address challenges ranging from saltwater intrusion in estuaries and real-time ensemble flood forecasting to high-resolution street-scale flood modeling for coastal urban resilience. In 2023, Dr. Chen served as an author for the New York City Panel on Climate Change (NPCC) 4th Assessment report. He has also published his work in leading journals including Water Resources Research, Earth’s Future, Hydrology and Earth System Sciences, and the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.
Beyond his research, Dr. Chen has been actively involved in teaching and outreach. He volunteered as a teacher in rural China early in his career. At Stevens, he continues to mentor students, teaching the graduate course Sea-Level Science and Probability and Statistics at the university. Among his honors, Dr. Chen received the John P. Breslin Award in 2021 for outstanding graduate research in ocean engineering.
