Global Reach
The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science is driving global discovery.
Our researchers span the globe, deploying innovative scientific methods to tackle Earth’s toughest environmental challenges—and shifting how the world understands them. Beyond the lab and the field, UMCES scientists are powerful catalysts for change. On national and global scales, they lead critical science panels, drive major conferences, and build award-winning partnerships designed to revolutionize environmental management.

Guanabara Bay and Chesapeake Bay Partnership
The long-standing relationship between the State of Maryland (USA) and the State of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) includes a goal of improving the health of both the Chesapeake Bay and Guanabara Bay.
Sustained Collaborations with WWF Zambia
UMCES has collaborated with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Zambia since 2018. Through this partnership, UMCES has provided training on the report card process and facilitated workshops within and outside of Zambia to foster transboundary water governance.
Socio-Environmental Report Cards Around the World
The Chesapeake Bay Report Card has served as a model for similar report cards aiming to better understand their local ecosystem health status. UMCES’ expertise in this process has resulted in dozens of report cards, including for the Mississippi River, USA; Long Island Sound, USA; Rio Grande, USA; Orinoco River, Colombia; the Great Barrier Reef, Australia; Upolu, Samoa; and Chilika Lake, India.
