Socio-Ecological Systems

UMCES scientists study the dynamic relationships between people and the environment to better understand how human activities shape natural systems and how environmental change affects communities. This research explores the social, economic, and policy dimensions of environmental challenges, including resource management, climate adaptation, conservation planning, environmental justice, and community resilience. The work melds traditional knowledge and progressive science through co-production with communities.

By integrating ecological science with human behavior, decision-making, and public engagement, UMCES researchers develop practical, science-based solutions that support sustainable communities and informed environmental stewardship.
