UMCES appoints Tom Buckmaster as Chair of Board of Visitors

Annapolis, MD – The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES), a premier research and educational institution working to understand and manage our world’s natural resources, welcomes Thomas L. Buckmaster as chair of its Board of Visitors.
Buckmaster retired from Honeywell in 2015 after serving for 15 years as global vice president for communications. The UMCES Board of Visitors provides advice and counsel to the President on matters pertaining to public outreach, development, and policy issues, and identifies strategic opportunities to support the university’s mission of research, education, and public service.
“Tom has been deeply engaged as a member of our Board of Visitors since 2009,” said UMCES President Fernando Miralles-Wilhelm. “I am excited for the leadership he will bring to bear as the university begins to execute a transformational strategic plan this year.”
At Honeywell, Buckmaster oversaw global advertising, branding, and communications for the company, a $40 billion enterprise with operations in more than 500 locations worldwide. He also served as president of Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s global philanthropic and community relations initiative. He was responsible for the repositioning of the company’s brand, the development and execution of an employee value proposition, and the creation of a global platform for corporate giving. The company’s philanthropic and community relations initiative is one of the most awarded in corporate America.
Before joining Honeywell, he served in senior agency leadership positions including president of Edelman New York, executive vice president and general manager of Hill & Knowlton in Washington, D.C., and senior partner at Fleishman Hillard. He currently serves as President of Midshore Community Mediation, providing free conflict resolution and mediation services for residents of Caroline, Dorchester and Talbot Counties.
Buckmaster has served on the UMCES Board of Visitors since 2009 and succeeds Gary Epstein, who joined the board in 2017 and has served as chair since 2023.
