Bio
Robert H. Gardner is a professor emeritus and past director of the Appalachian Laboratory, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMES). Research interests have included the prediction of ecological dynamics in spatially heterogeneous systems, implementation of risk based approaches for assessing effects of natural disturbances, and issues of land use and global change on sustainability of ecological systems. Gardner has published over 175 manuscripts and texts, including the second edition of “Landscape Ecology in Theory and Practice: Pattern and Process” with M. G. Turner and the volume “Scaling relations in experimental ecology” co-edited with colleagues at UMCES. Gardner has also contributed to the governance of the International Association of Landscape Ecology (IALE), serving as the President of the IALE Council. Quality of life has been assured by a broad interest in outdoor activities, readings in history and philosophy, and continued interactions with a delightful and productive group of colleagues.
