I‐6.00 UMCES Policy on Shared Governance

Policy recommended by UMCES Faculty Senate and by UMCES Administrative Council on 5/5/99; adopted by UMCES President Donald F. Boesch effective 1 July 1999. Updated 3/9/01.

This policy provides for the formal implementation of the USM Policy on Shared Governance in the University System of Maryland. It incorporates by reference those policies already in place that provide for the participation of faculty, students, and staff in the governance of UMCES.

It is UMCES policy that faculty, students, and staff shall participate with the administration in the shared governance of the Institution.

  1. Such participation shall be through the following bodies:
    1. Faculty, including all full-time and part-time ranks as defined in UMCES Policy II1.00: UMCES Faculty Senate (UMCES II-3.00).
    2. Students who are pursuing degrees under the direct supervision of UMCES
      faculty members regardless of the degree granting institution at which they
      are enrolled: UMCES Graduate Student Council (UMCES I-6.00.4)
    3. Non-Research Staff: UMCES Staff Council as defined in UMCES Policy I6.00.3
    4. Faculty Research Assistants Council (FRAC), as defined in UMCES Policy I-6.00.5 UMCES

  2. These governance bodies shall be advisory to the President of UMCES, who shall
    periodically consult with them as elected representative organizations of their
    respective constituencies.
