Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a student at the Chesapeake Biological Lab? The Next Generation: Student Interview Series will introduce viewers to who our students are, what they are researching and why it is important, highlights of the student experience at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, and where students hope their careers will take them.

Interviews will be hosted on Zoom and will last approximately 15 minutes. Video recordings will be archived on this webpage, and will be shared on YouTube and Facebook after each event.

Meet Megan Munkacsy, Master's Student

Meet Megan Munkacsy, a master's student at UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. Megan's thesis research investigates how stakeholder groups value shallow water ecosystems in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay. She hopes to develop a hierarchy of policy options that reflect stakeholder values related to conflicts between recovering bay grass beds and expanding oyster aquaculture.

Meet Christina Goethel, PhD Student

Meet Christina Goethel! After finishing her master's research on the impacts of ocean acidification on Arctic clams at UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, Christina decided to stay on for her PhD. Working with Drs. Jackie Grebmeier and Lee Cooper, Christina is now examining changes to Arctic clam populations over the last 25-years. Clams are an important food source in the Arctic food web, sustaining species like walrus and diving sea ducks.

Meet Maddy Lahm, Master's Student

Meet Maddy Lahm, a master's student at UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. Maddy uses advanced chemistry techniques to study the marine carbon cycle. She's investigating the fate and molecular structure of carbon that is fixated by picocyanobacteria at the sea surface and then transported to the deep ocean.

Meet Amber Fandel, Master's Student

Meet Amber Fandel, a master's student at UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. Amber is working with Dr. Helen Bailey to study dolphin and whale acoustic data to understand marine mammal behavior and movements through the Maryland Wind Energy area offshore from Ocean City, MD.

Meet Alex Gibbs, Master's Student

Meet Alex Gibbs, a master's student working in the labs of Dr. Solange Filoso and Dr. Michael Gonsior. Her research focuses on determining wetland's ability to remove and/or degrade pharmaceuticals and personal care products derived from septic waste.

Meet Kohma Arai, PhD Student

Meet Kohma Arai, a PhD student and Graduate Research Assistant working in the lab of Dr. Dave Secor at UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. Kohma is conducting his thesis research on the Atlantic mackerel while pursuing his interests in international fisheries management.
